Preah Vihear

It was exactly one month last week when the border conflict erupted in Preah Vihear province. The situation is very calm now. People, who fled their homes during the conflict, are back and continue their businesses as usual. Though, the conflict is still the hottest topic of everyday conversations.

But for me, it is not my visit's interest. I was there neither to visit the temple nor to find out what was going on. My purpose was to see my on-going environmental project's activities, helping farmers to adapt to climate change impact.

It was my first time to actually be in the field and met project staff and farmers, who my every work is aimed for. I had a very good opportunity to learn from them and especially to see all beautiful sites.

Below are some of the photos from the visit and check more here.

This is one of the typical farmers' houses in rural Cambodia and notably they are renovated when people's incomes are increased.

A very convenient and cost-saving transportation! You should try one day!

After the border conflict, Preah Vihear province gets more development attentions, and this irrigation project is one of the on-going efforts!

Will Cambodia catch the cold?

When the US sneezes, the whole world catches the cold. It is of course true because the US is the most powerful country in both politic and economy. The current financial crisis is a clear example. The US banking system and corporations are facing unstable situations; public spending is down. Economic transactions between the US and the world are less. As the result, the world export to the US decreases. The main focus here is whether Cambodia is among the cold catchers. It is hard to deny that Cambodia is still healthy while others have already been affected. Some predictions, including the IMF and World Bank, say the country's garment sector, which depends heavily on the US market, will affect by the US consumer saving. But this is somehow not really true. Americans at this financial crisis period try to cut their spending on luxurious commodities. The General Motor example of being bankruptcy is a sign that cars are not American choices anymore. Cambodian garment, on the other h...

Closing Cambo Six is a safe bet for securing government's social goals

The Phnom Penh Post's article "Game over for Cambo Six", published on February 26 about the government's closure of Cambodia's legal betting company Cambo Six revealed another major development of the Kingdom's policies towards gambling. It is more focused on long-term results of social improvement by eliminating contradictory forces such as gambling. The new policy will save a great deal for the government's poverty reduction plan, for public spending and for improvements in education. Firstly, the closure will remove the forces that contradict poverty-reduction efforts. This means at the same time the government and civil society are running programs to make people richer, gambling makes them poorer. Secondly, the government's order saves the country's public spending. The government, of course, loses tax income from gambling. But they do not need to increase the budget to cope with social problems resulting from gambling. Domestic violence, ro...
